Six Flags Great America To Host Cockroach-Eating Contest

GURNEE, Ill. (CBS) — The old-fashioned freak show might be too scary and too politically incorrect for most modern amusement parks, but Six Flags Great America may be coming close this weekend.

As WBBM Newsradio’s Mike Krauser reports, the amusement park is holding an unusual contest on Friday and Saturday night, and it’s not for the squeamish.

As part of the annual Fright Fest at Great America, contestants will have five minutes to eat as many cockroaches as possible.

And these are not deep-fried or chocolate-covered cockroaches. They are live Madagascar hissing cockroaches, which measure 1.5 to 3 inches long.

Any contestant with the courage to participate at all will get a pass to cut in line on a ride. The winner will get a season pass to Great America for next year.

In addition to the cockroach-eating contest, Fright Fest also features an assortment of haunted mazes, shows and ride. Among the featured attractions are mockups of a mental institution where a botched lobotomy resulted in mass murder, an abandoned Hollywood studio that was the site of a gruesome homicide, a mausoleum filled with brain-craving zombies, and a forest inhabited by a “forgotten primate” with a taste for blood.

Fright Fest is not recommended for children under 13.
