Woman Struck By Car, Killed In Brighton Park

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A woman was struck and killed by a car in the Brighton Park neighborhood on Wednesday as she was trying to load a lawnmower into a parked car.

Tina Ramirez, 40, was pinned between two cars when a driver lost control of her car and struck Ramirez as she was loading a lawnmower into the back of a parked car at about 1:10 p.m. Wednesday at 4400 S. Christiana Av., police said.

Ramirez, of 4501 S. Spaulding Av., was pronounced dead at 1:45 p.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

"There was nothing suspicious about it,'' said police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez. Drugs, alcohol and speeding were not factors either. It was an accident.''

Maria Castillo, 40, of the 4300 block of South Christiana, was eastbound on 44th Street when she somehow lost control of her 1997 Pontiac Bonneville and struck the victim, Perez said.

Ramirez had been loading a lawnmower into the back of a parked car and was pinned between the two vehicles in the wreck, the officer said.

Castillo was written two citations — failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and striking a pedestrian in the roadway, said Perez.

Castillo was also taken to Mount Sinai to be checked out and for tests, according to Perez.

The Police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
