ELGIN, Ill. (STMW) — A 5-year-old boy was fatally shot in an apparent gang-related attack Friday night in northwest suburban Elgin, police said.

The boy, 5, was in a car with relatives when he was shot about 7 p.m. in the 900 block of Elma Avenue, according to an Elgin police release.

The car was pulling out of a driveway when shots were fired, the release said. The boy’s relatives realized he was shot moments later and pulled into a gas station in the 1300 block of Dundee Avenue, where they called police.

The boy was taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin, where he was pronounced dead, according to police, who did not release the boy’s identity.

“It is believed that this car was specifically targeted,” Elgin police Chief Jeff Swoboda said. “We are determined to find those responsible for this incident.”

The Elgin police gang unit is investigating.

Things are really bad when you can’t back out of a driveway without someone getting shot. We are being overrun by criminals with no conscience or value for human life. I hope the police and judges catch and sentence these people accordingly. If we need more prisons – build them – it will put a lot of people to work and keep the criminals where they belong – behind bars.

I’m not getting the point of you making this comment. What does the color of the child’s skin have to do with the fact that his mother will never be able to hold him ever again have to do with his skin color? And where in the post did they mention he was african american? Your comment is pure igornace and is something that you really should have kept to yourself. Crimes aren’t justified because of the color of the person’s skin that commited it. It’s still a crime. Maybe before you speak next time you should think and rethink then keep your commit to yourself. A child was killed. It doesn’t matter what color his skin was, he is gone. Have some compassion and common sense.
