Hampton: Bears Are ‘As Bad As It Gets’

(CBS) As a Hall of Fame defender for the Chicago Bears, Dan Hampton takes pride in the “Monsters of the Midway” approach.

He’s played on some of the best defense the NFL has ever seen. So how does he feel about this Bears team?

“This is about as bad as it gets,” Hampton told The Mully and Hanley Show.

After giving up 543 total yard to the Panthers last week, the Bears followed that up by surrendering 395 yards of total offense to the Lions in a national embarrassment on Monday Night Football.

“You’re talking about a defense that supposedly we are supposed to be able to hang our hat on and they’ve given up (roughly) 1,000 yards over the last two weeks,” Hampton said. “This wasn’t New England or New Orleans, this was the Carolina Panthers with a rookie quarterback and the Detroit Lions, who are still looking for themselves on offense.”

Hampton pointed to the age of some of the Bears defenders, saying we may never see the Brian Urlacher (33) and Lance Briggs (30) of the past.

“When I turned 33, it was like I walked off a cliff,” Hampton said. “I couldn’t do anything anymore. Are these guys Briggs, Urlacher, (Julius) Peppers… Are these guys walking off the cliff?

So can we start talking about our draft choice?

  • Regime Change

COW-ER! COW-ER! PLEASE Bill, come save this franchise…..if the moronic McCaskey family will let you, that is.

  • Nazey

Cowher? What head coaching hire have the McCaskeys ever made that would lead you to believe they would go out and get a big name? Ditka: first time head coach when hired. Wannstedt: first time head coach when hired. Jauron: first time head coach when hired. Smith: first time head coach when hired. Need I say more? The McCaskeys are the Jerry Reinsdorf of football. Get a cheap, unproven coach who hopefully catches lightning in a bottle.
