LAKE STATION, Ind. (STMW) — A Brookfield woman was killed and a Berwyn woman was airlifted to a hospital from an SUV rollover crash on I-80/94 in northwest Indiana on Tuesday afternoon.
Indiana State Police on Tuesday night said the woman has been identified as Alicia E. Todd, 37, of Brookfield. A 45-year-old woman from Berwyn was airlifted to Advocate Oak Lawn Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
The crash happened just after noon, as a 2002 Chevrolet Trail Blazer headed eastbound on I-80/94 in the center lane just east of Ripley Street, a release from Indiana State Police said.
A witness said the Trail Blazer went to the left, then over-corrected hard to the right. The driver apparently lost control and the SUV went off the roadway, through the guard rail and rolled four or five times. As the SUV rolled, both the driver and passenger were ejected, the release said.
Todd was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lake County Coroner’s office from massive blunt force trauma, the release said. The Berwyn woman was airlifted to a hospital with multiple fractures and injuries.
I-80/94 eastbound was completely shut down for a time in order to accommodate a medical helicopter.
It’s still unclear whether Todd or the Berwyn woman were driving the SUV at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation.
