Truck Fatally Strikes Woman In Wheelchair

CHICAGO (CBS) - A cement truck operator has been cited for negligent driving after fatally striking a woman in her motorized wheelchair on the city's South Side.
As WBBM Newsradio's Dave Berner reports, police say the cement truck driver, Michael Carter, 31, of Glenwood, blew through a stop sign while heading east down the 300 block of West Pershing Road and hit the 60-year-old woman around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The woman is identified as Joyce Thomas, who lived on the next block east. She was pronounced dead at 4:29 p.m. Tuesday at Stroger Hospital of Cook County.
Thomas was in the crosswalk in a motorized wheelchair when the wreck occurred, police said. Police say she might have been walking her dog at the time.
As of Wednesday morning, no criminal charges had been filed, but the police Major Accident Investigation Unit continues to investigate.
