CHICAGO (CBS) — The pregame warm ups for two Chicago area youth football teams recently were filled with the usual drills.
Until the refs didn’t show up for the scheduled kickoff in Hanover Park.
So, to pass the time, the two teams–the Glen Ellyn Golden Eagles and Hanover Park Hurricanes–decided to compete in a different way: A dance-off.
One team lined up on around midfield, the other on the 10 yard line. Then “The Cha, Cha Slide” by DJ Casper blasted on the public address system.
“Slide to the left, slide to the right … reverse, reverse!”
Typically, those might be words from the coaches on the sideline during the game. Instead, it was lyrics from the song, as the boys, mostly 11- and 12-year olds, showed off their best line-dance moves.
And the crowd went wild! Watch the video here:
“You can only imagine trying to keep two groups of 11-year-olds pumped, warmed up and ready for a big tackle game,” said Glen Ellyn coach Jason Tews. “So we ran drills and tried to keep them active and their heads in the game. As time went on, we just had them on the field and they were passing to each other.
“Then that song came on the announcer tower and a few kids started dancing – within a couple minutes they were doing a dance off – it was hilarious.”
Both coaches agreed afterward: “This is what it’s all about.”
The refs eventually showed up and the game was played. Glen Ellyn won, 36-0.
Now, it’s time to get serious again: Playoffs start this week.
