Four Held, Cop Hospitalized After Shots Fired In Wicker Park

Updated 10/21/11 - 11:57 a.m.

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Four men, including one who allegedly displayed a gun at police, prompting them to fire shots during a foot chase, are being questioned after the early Friday incident in the Wicker Park neighborhood.

Officers were patrolling in the 1300 block of North Ashland Avenue because there has been a robbery pattern occurring in that area, police said.

Officers saw a group of men who they wanted to question but when they approached, the four fled and police gave chase on foot. During the pursuit, one suspect displayed a gun towards police, according to police.

The officers fired at the armed suspect about 1:25 a.m. in an alley at 1307 N. Ashland Ave, News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said.

No one was shot and the suspect escaped, Perez said.

Police checked area hospitals to make sure no one came in with a gunshot wound and searched the area for signs of blood, but found none, Perez said.

The suspects were found about an hour later in the 1300 block of North Bosworth Avenue where an ambulance was called, police said.

Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford confirmed paramedics went there at 2:38 a.m. for a shooting victim but the reported victim was not taken to a hospital.

Police however said an officer was admitted to Northwestern Memorial Hospital because he did not fell well, and possibly suffered chest or heart-related problems.

Police said four men – including the armed suspect they were chasing -- were taken into custody, but no charges had been field as of 10 a.m. A weapon was recovered, police said.

Grand Central Area detectives are investigating.
