Mackanin, Maddux To Interview With Cubs First

(CBS) Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin and Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux will be the first to interview for the vacant Cubs manager job, Theo Epstein told the Chicago Tribune.

According to the report, Mackanin will have dinner with Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer Thursday night and then interview for the job Friday. It's unclear when Maddux will interview, but it should happen within a week.

One candidate who won't have to interview is Terry Francona.

"I know him like the back of my hand," Epstein told the newspaper. "He knows me like the back of his hand. I don't think he'd have to (interview)."

Epstein and Francona have talked about the job, according to the report, but neither party was sure it was the direction they want to go in.

Epstein said Mackanin and Maddux are the only coaches the Cubs have received permission to talk to, but he does have calls into other teams.

Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum is expected to interview, according to multiple reports.
