Fire In Joliet Apartment Building Displaces 30 People

JOLIET, Ill. (CBS) -- About 30 people were displaced from their homes overnight, when a fire broke out in an apartment complex in Joliet.

Emergency crews responded at 10:38 p.m. to the report of a fire in the Evergreen Terrace Apartments complex at 362 N. Broadway St., according to Joliet Police Lt. Stephen Breen.

Firefighters arrived to find thick smoke on the fourth floor of a building in the five-story complex, Breen said. A couch had caught fire in one of the apartments, and the fire grew to the point where the building had to be evacuated.

About 30 people were displaced by the blaze, according to the American Red Cross, which set up a temporary shelter and will serve breakfast to those who had to evacuate.

The building did not sustain serious fire damage, according to Joliet Fire Dept. Operations Batallion Chief Brian Lucca. Most residents were evacuated as a precaution because sprinkler heads went off and caused water damage, and will likely be allowed back into their homes later Wednesday, he said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Lucca said.
