Read: Statement From Joe Paterno On Retiring

(CBS) Joe Paterno’s full written statement announcing his retirement at the end of the season:

I am absolutely devastated by the developments in this case. I grieve for the children and their families, and I pray for their comfort and relief.

I have come to work every day for the last 61 years with one clear goal in mind: To serve the best interests of this university and the young men who have been entrusted to my care. I have the same goal today.

That’s why I have decided to announce my retirement effective at the end of this season. At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can.

About The Scandal

This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more.

My goals now are to keep my commitments to my players and staff and finish the season with dignity and determination. And then I will spend the rest of my life doing everything I can to help this University.

The fact that the board let Paterno do this is mind-numbing. FIRE HIM. FIRE HIM NOW.

Paterno was given eyewitness testimony to sodomy, and he did nothing beyond the minimum to have the matter brought to light. He sought to protect the program and the brand… and now the brand is destroyed because he didn’t man-up a decade ago.

McQueary deserves things I can’t even type here. The fact that he witnessed it all and didn’t stop it is truly mind-numbing.

People have been fired for far less serious transgressions. Don’t give Paterno the ability to leave on his terms, even in a form of compromise. Kick him -and his ENTIRE staff- out the door, and don’t look back.

How is this man, a man who covered for a child abuser and did the absolute minimum required of him as a human being, much less an educator, still employed? There is only one truth: Penn State is obviously completely comfortable with child rape. What a deplorable place. Jim Tressel gets fired for letting some kids trade jerseys for favors, and Joe Paterno stays on even though he covered for a child rapist? WHAT IS WRONG WITH PENN STATE?!?!

    Sorry, y’all. I’m angry.

Mike McQueary should have beaten Jerry Sandusky to a bloody pulp. Brought the 10 year old boy / rape victim, to safety. Called the cops. And then told Joe Pa.

I simply can’t reconcile his inaction in my head. How do you witness a child being sodomized and NOT take immediate action? If not beating him to a pulp, at least ensuring that it never happens again?

Joe Paterno, by his lack of action, needs to be FIRED and not allowed to let yet another controversy slide on by him. Joe was supposed to be a man of honor…yet he dishonored his university, his fans, and his legacy by his lack of moral responsibility. Please FIRE this man immediately…and make sure you FIRE Mike McQueary as well!!

When confronted with the major choices like this that define our lives, there are two types of people:

    1) those that think that the 10 yr old boy being anally raped in the shower deserves

    – all of our help
    – all of our heroism
    – in any way we can give it to him
    – with all of our power
    – regardless of our other priorities
    – and regardless of what is legally required

    2) Catholics

God how I hope that this – the enabling of institutional rape of innocent children – is absolutely the FIRST thing that anyone thinks of when they hear his name from here on end. HE – the revered “Joe Pa” – had the power to do _something_ and he did not. You are as guilty as Sandusky. Take that to your grave you pathetic old man.

Joe Paterno hopes to spend the rest of his life helping Penn State. My hope is that he spends his dotage in courtrooms answering for himself and a system that watched a grown ass man keeping a stable of young boys to use as his personal sex slaves. His unwillingness to lift one finger to stop a man from abusing young children should be his epitaph.
