CHICAGO (CBS)– Four members of the Chicago Young Republicans watched the GOP presidential debate Saturday with CBS 2′s Suzanne Le Mignot.

Eight republicans running for president took the stage in South Carolina to field questions about national security and foreign policy, among other topics.

The “Commander-in-Chief” debate was sponsored by CBS News and the National Journal.

CYR member John Giokaris praised presidential contender Mitt Romney for saying he would not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons.

“I think he’s absolutely right,” Giokaris told Le Mignot. “If Iran gets a nuclear weapon, it’s a complete game-changer in the Middle East.  Iran is a very openly hostile regime, not just to us, but most of their neighbors as well.”

Both Cathryn Biga and Jim McKiernan got a chuckle out of Newt Gingrich’s comments regarding foreign aid: “You ought to start out at zero and say, ‘Explain to me why I should give you a penny?’”

“As a tax-paying citizen, I can see how we’re always, giving, giving, giving.  If we have a country here, like Pakistan that isn’t really, in my eyes, showing that they’re an ally towards us, why do we keep giving them money?” Biga said.
