(WSCR) The “Terry Francona to the Cubs” rumors took a defining turn Wednesday.

Sean McAdam of Comcast Sportsnet New England reported Francona will take the 2012 season off from baseball.

“I’m not going to try to manage next year,” Francona said Wednesday, “for my benefit.”

Francona’s name was rumored for the open managing position with the Cubs, and he interview with the Cardinals before ulitamtely deciding to take a season away from baseball.

“When I interviewed in St. Louis, I was genuinely excited about it,” said Francona. “St. Louis was such an exciting opportunity. But we were all beaten up at the end of the year, and after (interviewing) I took a step back and began to look at things realistically.”
