Provus: Cubs Can Expect Good Things From Sveum

(WSCR) Shortly before the official announcement of Dale Sveum as the new Cubs manager, former Brewers radio broadcaster Cory Provus joined The McNeil and Spiegel Show to discuss the new skipper.

So what kind of manager can the Cubs expect to get in Sveum?

"He just isn't going to sit back," Provus said. "He works with the hitters all the time. He's just a guy that's at the ball park early. He's at the ball park late. He spends a lot of time in the film room. He's just a great guy. The players like him. Watching him work with the hitters -- he'd work with them in the batting cage for hours and hours before the game. It was during those moments when he would get specific and try to help the guys physically, mechanically with their swing. But then, a couple of hours later, when they started taking BP on the field, not so much, unless the guys asked. He didn't want to put too much in their brain about two hours before the game."

As a new manager, Provus doesn't expect Sveum will have any trouble earning the team's respect -- something former manager Mike Quade struggled with during his time in Chicago.

"I think Dale might get a little bit more of a leash with that with the guys," Provus said. "He played for a long time. He's been in the big leagues for a long time as a coach. He's been around the division -- I think that might help. ... He's able to separate the two. He has the ability to separate when he can be your friend and when he has to be professional, do his job, to try to make that player a better hitter. He just has that skill and that skill set to do so."
