Biggs: Don't Expect Bears To Bring In New Starter

(WSCR) While Lovie Smith said the Bears plan to bring in a veteran quarterback to backup Caleb Hanie, one NFL expert cautioned fans not to get too excited.

The Bears have made it clear Hanie is their guy moving forward. Anyone brought it would be used only in emergency situations.

"There's nobody on the street right now that's going to excite you a whole lot," Brad Biggs of The National Football Post and Chicago Tribune told The Mully and Hanley Show. "Marc Bulger has turned down a number of teams in the summer, saying that he's retired. Maybe they make a push for him. But have you watched Marc Bulger play the last couple of years? There's nobody out there that excites me. What they've gotta do is find a way to win with Caleb Hanie. They've been down this path before with Kyle Orton. They need to see if Caleb Hanie can effectively manage the game, while they try to run the football a little better and play better defense."

Biggs also pointed to the complexity of Mike Martz's in-depth playbook as a deterrent from bringing someone new to the system in.

"With six games to go in the regular season, with Martz's offense as complicated and difficult to learn as it is, I think you've got to get someone who's familiar with the scheme," Biggs said. "Otherwise, you've got a guy who's just sitting there with his head burred in his playbook feeling hopelessly lost. That doesn't accomplish anything."
