Teen Boy Dead After Austin Shooting

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A teenage boy is dead after being shot Monday evening on the West Side, police said.

The 17-year-old boy was shot at 5:06 p.m. in the 5500 block of West Cortland Street, police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien said.

Witnesses heard gunshots and someone screaming before police officers found the boy lying in the street, Grand Central District police Capt. Ken Barnas said.

He was shot in both legs and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he later died, Barnas said.

Another shooting was reported nearby in the 1400 block of North Lotus Street, but Barnas said no victim was found. A weapon was recovered in the Lotus Street shooting, but it was not immediately known if the two shootings were related.

No one was in custody, and Grand Central detectives are investigating.
