Cubs Trade Colvin, LeMahieu For Rockies’ Weathers, Stewart

CHICAGO (CBS) — The Chicago Cubs have traded outfielder Tyler Colvin and infielder DJ LeMahieu to the Colorado Rockies for infielder Ian Stewart and pitcher Casey Weathers.

Colvin, 26, became expendable when the Cubs signed outfielder David DeJesus last month. LeMahieu was unlikely to make the 2012 roster.

Stewart, 26, is a career .236 hitter in five seasons, with 61 doubles, 54 home runs and 187 RBI in 432 major league games with the Rockies. The left-handed hitter has played most of his games at third base, but has also played at second and a handful of games in left field and right field.

Weathers, 26, was the Rockies’ first round pick in 2007 out of Vanderbilt and has a career 4.20 ERA in four seasons in the minors. He missed the 2009 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in October 2008.

Although he was on Colorado’s 40-man roster in 2011, he did not pitch in the majors.

When does the Cubs new rap group “Boy Genius Posse” start looking the part? Tyler Colvin is a solid player that got stuck in baseball purgatory, the Cubs organization. Time to blossom Tyler.

So that’s what the Winter Meetings got us… a .236 hitter in place of Rammy? Wow, this is less than what Geraldo Rivera found in Al Capone’s vault. Holy billygoat.

Oh yeah, when does the Cubs ticket price increase announcement come out?

Good trade – Weathers could be a great pickup. He’s post-Tommy John surgery, and he’s had a good amount of time to recover. The Cubs are getting him at the optimal time for basically nothing.

@ James: the Cubs have already announced they are lowering ticket prices for next year. Also, Colvin is a marginal MLB player who had his high water mark in 2010, with a relatively unproductive 20 hr season. Do you want Epstein to start over and do this thing right or not? It’s going to take time. You probably wanted them to sign Pujols to that $250 million albatross of a contract too, right?

Sorry to see Tyler Colvin go. He struggled last year but he proved he has potential his first year. He seemed like a nice guy, I wish him luck with the Rockies.
