UPDATED 12/12/11 7:01 a.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man was shot and wounded in a car on busy Broadway in Uptown, in the latest of a recent string of shootings in the neighborhood.

The latest shooting happened around 4:15 a.m. Sunday in the 4600 block of North Broadway, near Wilson Avenue, police said.

The victim, who is in his 30s, suffered a gunshot wound to the left side of his waist, Mirabelli said. The car he was driving sustained gunshots, as well, Mirabelli said. It was not clear if the car was parked or moving when the shooting occurred.

As WBBM Newsradio's Steve Miller reports, the victim, a 34-year-old Chicago man, was driving a 2000 Isuzu north on Broadway when he was shot in the left side of his waist, police said.

He was shot by a gunman who was apparently on foot.

The car he was driving was hit by gunshots as well, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.

The Uptown Update blog reported that the area in front of the Wilson Red Line 'L' stop was blocked off by police tape after the shooting.

Police think, but were uncertain Sunday, that the man may have driven himself to Weiss Memorial Hospital. He was then transferred to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was reported in serious, but stable, condition, police said.

This section of Uptown – one of the busiest and most densely-populated – has seen more than its share of gun violence recently.

The shooting Sunday occurred a couple of blocks from a shooting Friday evening where four people were wounded, at Sheridan Road and Wilson Avenue. Two were reported in critical condition.

A week ago Monday afternoon, there was no shooting reported, but the area around the Wilson 'L' stop was locked down by police during a six-hour standoff with suspected gang members. Three people were arrested after holing up in an apartment building at 4639 N. Broadway.

The SWAT team response in that incident shut down the CTA Red Line between the Addison and Berwyn stops for several hours, beginning in the middle of the afternoon rush.

On the morning of Sunday, Dec. 4, a 20-year-old man was fatally shot in the 4700 block of North Winthrop Avenue. The victim, Edward Clark, was shot in the head about a block from his home.

Ald. James Cappleman (46th), in an alert sent last week to residents, said that shooting was related to gang activity in the area.

On Tuesday, Dec. 6, a 26-year-old man was shot in the thigh about 1:40 p.m. in the 4500 block of North Magnolia Avenue.

Last Friday, Dec. 2, an 18-year-old man was critically wounded and a store employee injured in a shooting at Wilson Avenue and Sheridan Road.

On Tuesday, Nov. 22, two boys, ages 15 and 17, were wounded in a drive-by shooting at Sheridan and Wilson as they were standing on the street about 9:35 p.m.

On Sunday, Oct. 30, a man was wounded in a drive-by shooting at Wilson and Marine Drive.

On Monday, Oct. 31, about 2:38 p.m., a man was wounded in a drive-by shooting at Sheridan Road and Sunnyside Avenue.

On Uptown Update, some residents complained about the rise in violent crime in the area.
"What is (Ald.) Cappleman doing about this?" one reader wrote. "I have noticed things have got worse in the past few months. People are openly selling drugs near Wilson and Broadway and activity has escalated. "
