Pujols' Wife 'Mad At God' Over Cardinals' Offer

(CBS) Albert Pujols' wife says she and her husband had no intention of leaving St. Louis,  but were insulted by a five-year deal the Cardinals offered the slugger, which led to him signing with the Angels.

In an interview with Christian radio station KLJY in St. Louis, Deidre Pujols attempted to set the record straight, saying reports that Cardinals offered Pujols a 10-year deal are false.

"The offers that people have seen on television, I'm going to tell you what, had that offer been the one that was given us, with guarantees, we would have the (Cardinals) bird on our back," she told the radio station.

She said the Cardinals only offered a five-year deal, but did not say whether that offer included options for additional years.

"We got over that insult and felt like Albert had given so much of himself to baseball and the community that he at least deserved the opportunity to have real lifelong ... I tell you what: We didn't want to go through this again. Free agency, it's stressful."

Pujols ended up signing a 10-year, $254 million offer with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Since then, the couple has received a lot of backlash from the St. Louis community and lost support for their local charity organizations.

"When it all came down, I was mad," Deidre Pujols told the radio station. "I was mad at God because I felt like all the signs that had been played out through the baseball field, our foundation, our restaurant, the Down Syndrome Center, my relationships, my home, my family close. I mean, we had no reason, not one reason, to want to leave. People were deceived by the numbers."
