But the driver decided not to submit to the carjacker and stepped on the gas.

Police say the carjacker started shooting, and shattered the driver's side window.

The driver was cut in the face with glass, but thought, incorrectly, that he had been shot. In a panic, the driver crashed into several vehicles a few blocks away in the 5400 block of West Harrison Street.

The driver was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County for treatment. The woman who was in the car with him was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, as were two other who were involved in the crash.

No one was in custody in the crash as of late Friday morning.
