U Of I Threatens Legal Action For Those Who Buy .xxx Domains

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (CBS) -- The University of Illinois won't be buying .xxx domains, but it is threatening legal action against anyone who might be inclined to start a porn site that besmirches its good name.

As WBBM Newsradio's Dave Marsett reports, many universities are buying up domain names preemptively to keep them from becoming adult sites with a .xxx extension. For example, Southern Illinois University has purchased siu.xxx, southernillinois.xxx and saluki.xxx.

Illinois State University similarly registered several domains in September.

But the News-Gazette in Champaign reports Illinois administrators say it's impossible to think of, and purchase, every name with a connection to the U of I.

The university suggested that prurient Web site owners could register such sites as Illinigirls.xxx and Hotillinicoeds.xxx, the News-Gazette reports.

But the school says university lawyers will send cease-and-desist letters to anyone they feel is violating trademarks.

The ICM Registry of Florida started making .xxx domains available for registration earlier this month, the News-Gazette reported.
