Fans of all ages have celebrated live thoroughbred racing at Chicago’s only family-owned, “hometown” track for over 120 years! Racing at Hawthorne originally “broke out of the gates” in 1891. The pageantry, competition and tradition proudly continue today.
Thoroughbred racing was once considered to be the biggest spectator sport in the country. Hawthorne boasted crowds of over 35,000 fans throughout the early to mid-twentieth century. And Hawthorne has been home to some of racing’s greatest names, such as, Announcer Phil Georgeff, who called over 96,000 races over the course of his 34-year career!
