3 Dead, 16 Wounded So Far In Weekend Violence

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Three people have been killed and at least 16 others wounded in acts of violence throughout the city so far this New Year's weekend.

The incidents included a man who was shot dead by police after he pointed a gun at them on the South Side just after midnight Sunday and a young woman who was found unconscious Saturday night in a Logan Square street after having been beaten.

Friday night, a 25-year-old man was found dead in an alley from head trauma in the 6000 block of South Morgan Street. About 9:30 p.m., Jermaine Baskin was found in the alley. Baskin, of 908 W. 51st St., was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County at 10:26 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

An autopsy Saturday found Baskin died of head trauma from an assault.

Early Saturday, a 19-year-old man was shot in the chest and armpit area about 1:30 a.m. in the 3400 block of West Jackson, police said. He walked into Advocate Bethany Hospital where he was listed in serious condition.

A 27-year-old man was shot at while in a car in the 7000 block of South Indiana Avenue about 1:40 a.m., police said. Someone approached the car on foot and shot into the car, shattering the window. He was either shot in the neck or possibly cut by a piece of glass. He was at to Stroger Hospital in "stable" condition.

About 5:30 a.m. Saturday, a 23-year-old man was shot in the shoulder and knee at 4432 S. Wood St., police News Affairs Officer Michael Sullivan said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, Sullivan said.

About 10:20 a.m. Saturday, a man in his 20s was wounded in a shooting in the South Side Back of the Yards neighborhood. The victim, who was believed to be in his late 20s, was standing on the sidewalk in the 4800 block of South Bishop Street, according to police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli. Someone walked up to the man and opened fire, Mirabelli said. The victim was wounded in the mid-section and taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition had stabilized, Mirabelli said.

Saturday afternoon, an 18-year-old man was fatally shot in a Cadillac in the Englewood neighborhood.

Police responded at 3:05 p.m. to the 6000 block of South Green Street, according to police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety.

Officers found 18-year-old Earl Warner, of 10149 S. Lafayette Ave., who had been shot twice in the neck seated inside a white Cadillac at the Green Street address. He was pronounced dead at 3:50 p.m. at Stroger Hospital.

Police on Sunday were asking for the public's help to identify a woman found beaten and left unconscious on a Logan Square street Saturday night.

The woman, believed to be in her late teens or early 20s, was found on the street in the 2100 block of Rockwell Street at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, police said. She was assaulted "and it appears she may have been beaten," since she had head and body trauma, News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said.

The woman had attended a concert at the Congress Theatre, 2135 N. Milwaukee Ave., according to police. She did not have any identification on her when she was found.

The woman was described as white, 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-8, 135 to 155 pounds, with hazel eyes, long, wavy brown hair, a light complexion, and three ear piercings.

Harrison Area detectives were "talking to several individuals" classified as "persons of interest," Sunday morning, Perez said.

Five people were wounded in stabbings Saturday night.

Two men were critically wounded Saturday night in a stabbing in the Northwest Side Mayfair neighborhood.

The two men were stabbed shortly after 9 p.m. in a domestic-related fight in the 4200 block of North Kilpatrick Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.

A 61-year-old man was stabbed in the abdomen and a 36-year-old man was stabbed in the lower back, Alfaro said.

Both were taken in critical condition to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Fire Media Affairs said.

A man was in custody in connection with the stabbing, Alfaro said. He suffered minor cuts and was taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital.

Two teen boys and a woman were injured in a stabbing Saturday night outside a strip mall near the Howard Red Line CTA station on the Far North Side.

A 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old were both stabbed in the back about 8:10 p.m. in the 7500 block of North Clark Street, according to Alfaro.

A 23-year-old woman was cut on the arm during the incident, Alfaro said.

Fire Media Affairs reported the incident occurred at the Howard CTA Red Line station. Alfaro said the stabbing happened outside a strip mall, and there is a strip mall adjacent to the station.

All three stabbing victims were taken in "stable" condition to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, Fire Media Affairs said.

It was unclear who may have been the attacker, Alfaro said.

Just after midnight Sunday, police shot and killed a man in the Southwest Side Marquette Park neighborhood after he allegedly pointed a gun at officers.

The shooting happened in the 7200 block of South Campbell Avenue about 12:10 a.m., Alfaro said.

Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said police officers heard gunshots in the vicinity of 72nd Street and Campbell Avenue and pulled into an alley to investigate. Officers observed a man in a backyard holding a gun.

Police later identified the man as Michael Smith, 52, of 2447 W. 72nd St.

Officers approached Smith, announced they were police and ordered him to drop the weapon, police said.

Instead, Smith allegedly turned and fled on foot with officers in pursuit.

Officers ordered him to drop his weapon during the chase. However, Smith ran down some basement stairs and allegedly turned toward police with the gun in his hand, and police then shot him.

Smith was pronounced dead at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn at 12:59 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

Shortly after midnight on New Year's Day, a 51-year-old Pullman neighborhood man was wounded when he was struck by a bullet while sitting on his porch.

The man was sitting on a porch in the 11800 block of South Wallace Street when he was shot in his right thigh about 12:10 a.m., Perez said.

He was taken in good condition to Christ Medical Center.

Also in the Pullman neighborhood, two people were wounded in a shooting about 4 a.m.

The shooting happened outside at 11833 S. Yale Ave., according to News Affairs Officer Amina Greer.

A 31-year-old man was shot in the side and back and was taken in critical condition to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Greer said.

A 27-year-old woman was shot in the foot and taken to Roseland Community Hospital, Greer said.

About 5:15 a.m. Sunday, a man was shot in the chest in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

The man suffered gunshot wounds to the chest about 5:15 a.m. in the 5900 block of South Washtenaw Avenue, Greer said.

He was taken in an undetermined condition to Christ Medical Center, Greer said.

About 7:10 a.m. Sunday a young male was found shot in the leg in the Roseland neighborhood.

Police responded to reports of a person shot in the 10200 block of South Perry Avenue, Perez said. Officers at the scene saw a young male of an undetermined age in the backyard of a residence with a gunshot wound to the leg, Perez said.

The victim was taken in serious condition to Christ Hospital and Medical Center.
