CHICAGO (CBS) — Nine-year-old twins were recovering Friday morning, after their home caught fire on the city’s West Side.
The fire broke out Thursday night in the 4600 block of West Erie Street, near Kenton Avenue. Firefighters say one of the children jumped out of a second-floor window to escape the flames.
The children, a boy and girl, were taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital after inhaling smoke in the house fire in the 4600 block of West Erie, fire investigators said.
The twins are both expected survive, fire officials said. Their grandparents, who also lived in the home, made it out safely, officials said.
A friend of the displaced family told the Chicago Sun-Times that the grandfather said he was just about to get into the bathtub on the second floor, when one of the twins ran into the bathroom, yelling, “The house is on fire!”
The fire was contained to the back of the home, officials said. The cause remained under investigation Friday morning.
