CHICAGO (STMW) - Bond was denied Saturday for two men charged with killing Chicago Police Officer Clifton Lewis.

Edgardo Colon, 34, and Tyrone Clay, 29, were both charged with first-degree murder of a peace officer.

Lewis, who was buried Thursday after a funeral with honors, was gunned down during a holdup on Dec. 29 at the M&M Quick Foods at 1201 N. Austin.

Police have said two masked men walked into the store and robbed it. The bandits got away with hundreds of dollars. Lewis fired a shot before one of the robbers opened fire on him with a TEC-9 semiautomatic weapon with a high-capacity clip, sources said.

Lewis' weapon is missing along with the TEC-9, sources said.

Colon and Clay were among four men police were questioning in the murder. At a hearing Saturday at the Cook County Criminal courthouse, bond was denied for both men.

Colon is a parolee who was in a car that police stopped Tuesday for making an improper turn. Police found a .357-caliber handgun with two live rounds in the car.

On Friday, a judge ordered Colon held without bond on a gun charge stemming from the traffic stop.

Sources said the traffic stop by tactical officers was the key to solving the crime.

Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said the charges came about after "basic tried and true police work."

"We've had police officers on the street, in uniform, making arrests, debriefing prisoners, gathering intelligence, gathering clues, getting tips from the public," he said at a Saturday news conference. "I couldn't be more proud of these guys and gals … It's just amazing."

Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez said both men charged in the officer's  slaying gave videotaped statements to police.

Officials would not comment on the status of the other two men who were being held in the slaying.
