Woman Shot Dead In Englewood

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 32-year-old woman was fatally shot Saturday evening while standing in the alley outside her Englewood neighborhood home with her teenaged son and some friends.

About 5:55 p.m. the woman was with her teen son and some friends outside near the garage at her home in the 5600 block of South Justine Street, police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak said.

Two men dressed in black were seen in the lot across the street, Kubiak said. Shots rang out and the woman was struck by gunfire, Kubiak said. She was able to get back into her home and someone called 911.

A Chicago Fire Department ambulance took the woman, identified as Soraya A. Gibson, of 5623 S. Justine St., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where she was pronounced dead at 6:32 p.m. Gibson had been shot in the alley behind her house, according to the medical examiner's office.

An autopsy Sunday found she suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and her death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner's office.

No one was in custody Sunday and Wentworth Area detectives are investigating.
