Bitter Cold Doesn't Stop Cyclists On Winter Bike To Work Day

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The temperature rang in at 6 degrees early Friday morning, but some hearty souls decided to shrug it all off and bicycle to work.

As WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports, Friday is Winter Bike to Work Day in Chicago. The Active Transportation Alliance is celebrating it by giving out coffee and cheesecake in Daley Plaza once the cyclists arrive.

Amanda Woodall, 35, bikes to work.

"I work in River North, and I've been doing it for about five years – even in the wintertime," Woodall said. "I find that it's easier to stay warm riding a bike than it is to stay warm standing at a bus stop."

Winter bicyclists admit the streets are a bit tricky for them when snow comes, so they say if worse comes to worst Friday afternoon, they can always load their bikes onto the front of a CTA bus and get home that way.
