CHICAGO (CBS) — It’s an election year, but don’t look for the Chicago Sun-Times to tell you which candidates it favors.
As WBBM Newsradio’s Regine Schlesinger reports, for the first time in its 71-year history, the Sun-Times says it will not make endorsements in the upcoming elections.

The paper says its editorial board will provide readers with clear and accurate information about candidates’ positions, and will post their questionnaires online. Subscribers can also watch videos of the Sun-Times’ interviews with candidates online.
But the paper will no longer make endorsements.
In an editorial published Monday, the Sun-Times essentially said as a newspaper endorsements are passé at a time when there are so many other sources of information that “allow even a casual voter to be better informed than ever before.”
The editorial went on to say research shows endorsements don’t change many votes anyway, but readers often complain that candidate endorsements show a hidden bias.
Ironically, it was complaints of bias on the part of the Chicago Tribune that in part motivated Marshall Field III to found the Sun-Times in the first place, the editorial said. Field felt it necessary to push for President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal and the entry of the U.S. into World War II, in contrast to Col. Robert McCormick and his isolationist and anti-Roosevelt Tribune, the editorial said.
However, the editorial is quick to point out, that was a bygone era “when many American newspapers were unabashedly partisan, and not necessarily only on the editorial page. Not unlike news shops on cable TV and the Web today, they catered to a core of readers who thought very much like them.”
Today, newspapers’ goal is to appear to the widest readership they can with unbiased news coverage.
“They want to inform you, not spin you,” the Sun-Times said.
The Sun-Times went on to call editorials “telling you what to do.”
“As many of you have told us, you can make up your own mind, thank you very much,” the editorial said. “We endorse that opinion.”

The problem for the Sun-Times is that they want to endorse Obama, but they can’t because of the lousy job he’s done. But they hate all the Republicans in the race. Therefore, they will just stop doing endorsements.

The Sun-Times isn’t qualified to endorse anyone. Their regular columnists (at least one of whom is on the editorial board) are profoundly ignorant. One blamed her bank for an increase in her property tax bill. Another, an alcoholic wife beater, touts himself as an opera buff but had never of Donizetti. To top it all off, they have Jesse Jackson. as a regular op-ed contributor.

You don’t have to read their editoral page to see which way that paper leans. Nearly every columnist they have posting their opinions on the pages of the paper are liberals…and not just run-of-the-mill liberals–very delusional liberals. Mary Mitchell cannot write a column that doesn’t talk about being black or racism; Richard Roeper can’t write a column unless he’s bashing someone on the right, especially Sarah Palin.
I cancelled my subscription to this rag a long time ago. Tribune is no better. They’re just another liberal paper.

My local paper is the same way. They only endorse Republicans for very minor offices; and the only reason they do that is so they can point to them and claim to be non-partisan.
I’m going to write to them and offer to do their presidential endorsement for them. All I have to do is endorse Obama and repeat Democrat talking points word-for-word. I can have it to them 10 months early, and they can pay me a fraction of what they pay their regular guy to write it. It’s a win-win!

The job of any news source is to keep an eye on ALL government, not just the ones they don’t agree with. If they were unbiased in filling their role as a watchdog, there would be far less corruption on BOTH sides of the aisle.

They’re done making endorsements, because who are they going to endorse this time around? Democrats have been a spectacular disaster in Illinois. The Sun Times is going to have a hard time defending its endorsement of Democrats in Illinois, considering that they have ruined the finances of the state and raised personal income taxes by 67%. Illinois now has the lowest credit rating in the nation (lower than California) and the Sun Times doesn’t want to face up to the fact that it is their previously endorsed candidates that have created this disaster of epic proportions.

The Sun-Times editorial board doesn’t even know its own history. Marshall Field III founded The Chicago SUN in 1941. In 1948, it merged with the Chicago Times to become the Sun-Times. In 2012 it has become irrelevant.
