Emery Focuses On Talent In Later Draft Rounds

(WSCR) With the Bears narrowing their GM search down to two candidates, a decision could come within the week.

Nick Wright of 610 sports in Kansas City joined The McNeil and Spiegel Show to break discuss candidate Phil Emery, the director of college scouting for the Chiefs.

"As the director of college scouting, his job is to find successes in later rounds. ... You can see a little bit, in the fifth round, to get Kendrick Lewis, who has started every game of his pro career at safety? I think you can say that's a good find by him," Wright said. "Jerrell Powe, he didn't make it on the field this year, but he's a serious talent. He's another guy, oddly enough, from Mississippi in the sixth round. You like that."

"Even when you look back to his time in Atlanta, you say, OK, the director of college souting, it's not hard to pick Eric Berry. Just like when he was in Atlanta, it wasn't hard to pick Matt Ryan. Who did you get in the fifth, sixth, seventh round? It's hard to find a lot of success stories even from his time in Atlanta. His time in Kansas City, he's only been here for two drafts, so it's hard to really evaluate that."
