Man Robbed At Gunpoint In Broad Daylight Near Northwestern Campus

EVANSTON, Ill. (CBS) -- Police are searching for suspects after a grad student was robbed at gunpoint in broad daylight Thursday near Northwestern University in Evanston.
The student was robbed as he walked east on Garnett Place from Ridge Avenue around 2:50 p.m. Garnett Place is a residential street lined with frame houses, which ends at Maple Avenue across from the Engelhart Hall high-rise graduate dorm.
Two men approached and took a cell phone from him. One of the men pointed a gun at the student's chest and told him to put his hands up, while the other took the victim's bag and went through it, Evanston police said. The robbers took the student's Samsung cell phone, according to police.
The student contacted police on a campus emergency phone at Maple Avenue and Emerson Street about a block from the scene. Police officers from the Evanston and Northwestern police departments responded, a Northwestern alert said.
The student was not hurt in the robbery. The cell phone was recovered later by Evanston police just a short distance from the robbery.
The first offender is a black man, about 20 to 25, 6-foot-2, about 180 pounds with a medium build. He was wearing a light gray hooded sweatshirt and a light colored shirt.
The second robber was also a black male, about 15 to 20, 5-foot-5, about 160 pounds. He had a medium build and had short-cropped hair. He was wearing a black and red fleece jacket, the alert said.
The men were last seen fleeing west from the robbery scene.

Campus police are reminding students to report suspicious activities immediately to campus police or Evanston police by dialing 911 or using a blue-light emergency phone.
