5 Injured, Including Child, In North Side Fire

CHICAGO (STMW)-- Five people,  including a 3-year-old girl and police officer, were hospitalized following a smoky fire that started Friday night at a North Side apartment.

The fire started about 8:40 p.m. from cooking in the kitchen of a second floor apartment at 2303 N. Clybourn Ave., according to Fire Media Affairs.

A 3-year-old girl was initially taken in critical condition to Children's Memorial Hospital, the fire department said. By 10:15 p.m., the girl was reportedly responding well and was alert and talking.

Four adults, including a Chicago police officer, were taken to area hospitals in fair to serious condition, according to the fire department. The officer suffered smoke inhalation injuries.

Firefighters contained the blaze to the kitchen where it started, fire officials said. No smoke was found on any other floors and paramedics "checked and calmed" residents outside.

As many as four police officers were inside the building helping residents, according to dispatch reports. Police could not immediately provide further details.

Security helped a handicapped man get down the stairs, according to the reports.

The fire, which was elevated to a still-and-box alarm with an EMS Plan 1 response for five ambulances, was controlled by 9:15 p.m.
