CHICAGO (CBS) – The parent company of Jewel-Osco today announced plans to cut its workforce by 800, including about 20 jobs in the Chicago area.

SUPERVALU said most of the cuts will take place this month, including approximately 20 positions at Jewel-Osco’s office headquarters in Itasca.

The reductions include both current positions and open jobs that will not be filled, the company said.

The company said in a statement that the reductions are part of its plan to reduce permanent expenses and cut operating costs. The cuts will allow the company to provide more competitive prices to consumers, the company said.

The reductions will be across most departments within the company, but generally will not affect store-level associates.

The company also said it will focus on investing capital into the growth of Save-A-Lot, its discount grocery store chain, as well as continuing to expand its wholesale distribution business to more than 2,000 independent retailers nationwide.

I work at Jewel-Osco in West Chicago and I Urge everybody to PLEASE shop at Jewel-Osco and help our Supermarket as much as possible.

@Dan, sorry dude but their prices are way too high. I use to shop there but with this economy…. not anymore. You can’t even get good pork there anymore. Everything is injected with those solutions (Hormel brand) and at least by the one out by me, that’s all that is available.

With Wal-Mart Market now here, it’s hard to shop at Jewel and especially Dominick’s any more. You will save at least 25% overall shopping at Wal-Mart relative to Jewel and Dominick’s, with many items up to 40% less at Wal-Mart. The only problem with Wal-Mart is the somewhat limited selection and the produce and meat selections, which aren’t the best.

JEWEL went to hell when they got rid of hundreds of elite empolyees around 1997 when they started a buy out program as business allowed, well they let all go,and the Union Bas*ards sat back and let it happen without any consulting, you can take your unions and shoved them they have serve their purpose many years ago,to bad JEWEL but your as ses are on the way out.
