Sanitary Conditions Lead Morton Grove To Close LA Fitness Club

MORTON GROVE, Ill. (CBS) — An LA Fitness health club in Morton Grove has been ordered shut down because of unsanitary conditions.

As WBBM Newsardio’s Bernie Tafoya reports, the Village of Morton Grove shut down the LA Fitness club at 6821 W. Dempster St. in Morton Grove on Wednesday afternoon. Village administrator Ryan Horne said Morton Grove tried for months to get the company to address sanitary conditions.

“I certainly don’t want to get graphic, but what I will say is there wasn’t toilet paper available, there wasn’t soap, there wasn’t shampoo, and mold and mildew in the bathrooms,” Horne said.

He said about 75 people were working out when the village shut down the health club.

“We had members coming up to us thanking us. We had members coming up to us saying, ‘You should have shut them down six months ago,’” Horne said.

The Morton Grove LA Fitness is one of several former Bally Total Fitness clubs that changed hands in December.

Horne says the health club can reopen as soon as it cleans up its act.

Club members confirmed that conditions at the gym left something to be desired.

“There’s a lot of bacteria that could grow in locker rooms,” club member Melissa Woo tells CBS 2’s Mike Puccinelli. “I’m glad to know they’re at least taking action to clean it up.”

Owners could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Let me get this straight. Members were thankful the place was shiut down? Then why were they going there in the first place?

    • Nathan Kagan

In a couple of month there would be no members left. We paid for 2 years and also we were disgusted we hoped they will improve. but we started to look around for a different club. I am at loss why LA Fitness bought Bally. These people are totally inept and should be spanked in public.

These people should exercise their brain instead.

  • LA Fitness Wake Up!

Non & James Because it needed action and most people didn’t go into the locker rooms only used equipment. So, hopefully it’s cleaned up and ready to utilize all of it’s “benefits” instead of just working out and leaving without utilizing locker rooms, showers, steam rooms.

Sounds like a bunch of smelly sub-urbanites are on the loose. Watch out.

  • Clean them up

LA Fitness needs to wake up! Several locations are crazy dirty. Lots of new gyms in the area.

i don’t think they will reopen. Just pass by and is all locked down for good . looks like this is the part of the plan of how to cancel all bally s members. I pay only 10$ per month for now but this is not enough profit for la fitness. Lets just wait and see when the rest will be closed . there is also one in Alsip that was closed for the same reason. First everyone from bally s switched over to La fitness so now your membership is no longer valid with bally s and la can do whatever they like. Brilliant plan !

They reopened today. But your theory seems to be a little off, why would LA. Fitness but all these health Clubs just to close them? That is spending money just to throw it away.

      Shouldn’t criminal charges be filed?

  • Morton Grove Health Club Reopens After Closure « CBS Chicago

[…] reasons that prompted the gym’s closure Wednesday included the absence of toilet paper and soap in the locker rooms, village officials have said. […]

Blame (and shame) can also be placed on some of the patrons that leave the place dirty and unsanitary. One day (and that was the last time) I was taking a shower and smelled something horrible. I looked in the stall next to me and there was POO on the floor. No joke.

    • Nathan Kagan

Of course some people are pigs. But patrons will not vacuum the floors or fix the pool. The dirtier the place the less people care. So again the blame is squarely on LaFitness.

  • Joe

Too bad they are completely shutting down the gym in may, sucks for all of you people who have 2 year contracts

    • Nathan Kagan

      Are you sure?
      They are open now.
      How can we find out?
