Sanitary Conditions Lead Morton Grove To Close LA Fitness Club

MORTON GROVE, Ill. (CBS) -- An LA Fitness health club in Morton Grove has been ordered shut down because of unsanitary conditions.

As WBBM Newsardio's Bernie Tafoya reports, the Village of Morton Grove shut down the LA Fitness club at 6821 W. Dempster St. in Morton Grove on Wednesday afternoon. Village administrator Ryan Horne said Morton Grove tried for months to get the company to address sanitary conditions.

"I certainly don't want to get graphic, but what I will say is there wasn't toilet paper available, there wasn't soap, there wasn't shampoo, and mold and mildew in the bathrooms," Horne said.

He said about 75 people were working out when the village shut down the health club.

"We had members coming up to us thanking us. We had members coming up to us saying, 'You should have shut them down six months ago,'" Horne said.

The Morton Grove LA Fitness is one of several former Bally Total Fitness clubs that changed hands in December.

Horne says the health club can reopen as soon as it cleans up its act.

Club members confirmed that conditions at the gym left something to be desired.

"There's a lot of bacteria that could grow in locker rooms," club member Melissa Woo tells CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli. "I'm glad to know they're at least taking action to clean it up."

Owners could not be reached for comment Thursday.
