LAKE FOREST, Ill. (CBS) — A 15-year-old boy was hit and killed by a Metra train in Lake Forest Tuesday morning.

The teen, a student at Lake Forest High School, was hit by a Union Pacific North Line train around 7:25 a.m. in the 1400 block of Western Avenue in the North Shore suburb, Lake Forest police Chief Glenn Burmeister said.

The engineer did not know he had hit a pedestrian, Metra spokesman Tom Miller said.

Police said there were no witnesses to the incident.

A 911 caller told police a body was found lying on the tracks.

As WBBM Newsradio’s Steve Miller reports, Lake County Coroner Artis Yancey says investigators are still trying to find out what happened. He says an autopsy will be conducted on Wednesday.

Yancey says the crossing where the boy was killed was open and had no gates.

UP North Line trains were delayed for about an hour as crews investigated.

On Jan. 9, another 15-year-old Lake Forest High School student, Farid Hussain, was hit and killed by a train at another crossing at Deer Path Road.

Witnesses said Husain went around the gates and stepped in front of a train, and his death is believed to have been a suicide.
