Pompei: Bears Should Draft DE To Complement Julius Peppers

(WSCR) While most mock drafts have the Bears selecting a wide receiver with the No. 19 pick, that position isn't the only need the team has to fill.

In fact, one Bears expert thinks a defensive end to complement Julius Peppers might be the best plan.

"I think that's a great idea," Dan Pompei of the National Football Post and Chicago Tribune told The McNeil and Spiegel Show. "Depending on how free agency goes -- there's a lot that could happen between now and then. Maybe they find a defensive lineman in free agency. To me, in a perfect world, you'd be able to find maybe a wide receiver in free agency and go out and get a young defender, a young pass-rusher who could be a building block for the defense.

Though the Bears have a talented core of players on the defensive side of the ball, a youthful injection of talent wouldn't hurt.

"If you look at the Bears defense, you've got some really good players, but they've all got some miles on them and they're not going to be around forever," Pompei said. "I think what the defense really needs is a young guy that you can say, 'This kid is going to be here for the next 10 years. We'll hang our hat on that and build around him.' If you can get a good pass rusher, there's nothing better than a young pass rusher who gets to the quarterback all the time."
