CHICAGO (CBS) — Want a prescription for Viagra? You may have to sit down and watch a horrific video about the drug’s possible side effects.

A battle over that idea is brewing in the Illinois state capital. It’s linked to a controversial anti-abortion bill, CBS 2’s Mike Parker reports.

If an Illinois lawmaker gets her way, men seeking Viagra prescriptions for erectile dysfunction, will be required to watch a graphic video first.

“They need to see a visual depiction of the treatment for the most common side effect to Viagra use, which is priapism, and it’s not a pretty procedure to watch,” state Rep. Kelly Cassidy, a Chicago Democrat, says.

Cassidy says she came up with the idea because of another Springfield proposal that would require physicians, before any abortion, to offer to perform an ultrasound examination and allow the patient to view it if she chooses.

That measure came from another Chicago Democrat, State Rep. Joseph Lyons.

“There might be a little fraction of women who might want to see that ultrasound, who might change their minds. If it saves one life in Illinois, I’m for it,” he says.

Cassidy counters: “It is inappropriate to insert the legislature into a medical decision in this way. It just isn’t right.”

Asked if her proposal on Viagra is equally wrong, Cassidy replied, “If we are going to do this, we need to do it in a way that is applied equally.”

Lyons says Cassidy is merely coming up with “an unfriendly amendment to cause confusion and a diversion.”

Cassidy says she is tired of politicians deciding that “women are incapable of making their own decisions.”

Both of these elected officials are on CRACK !!!

  • Bob Hamilton

    (spitoooeee) what graphic side effects?

    • Tom Baxter

What she wants guys to see is the needles and knives at work to bring the erection down. It’s bloody, but not painful except the first couple of needles used to numb you up. There’s a low rate of post treatment funtional failure.

      • seamus

While there may be a “low rate of post treatment functional failure”, I would hazard to guess that there is an absolute rate of pre-treatment curling up in the fetal position on the floor failure after watching such a video.

  • mad at goverment

I wish these so call elected officials would get back to work and do what the tax payers put them in office and stay out of birth control women have control over their bodies just like man do so get back to work and quit wasting money. I do not like someone force their beliefs down our throats keep religion out of politics.

  • Toonces

How is this a bad thing? Many prescrip[tion drugs ARE deadly and the public should be informed!

    • WetNurse

I can make an informed decision without such legislation. Pharmaceutical companies are already required to disclose known side-effects. Making me watch a guy with 4-hour hard-on is hardly going to aid in my decision making process. Haven’t you seen and heard the commercials on the telly?

This is nothing more than Ms. Cassidy wooing her base of ultra-liberals in an attempt to win the primary and keep her appointed position in the house. She is simply grandstanding, in poor fashion at that.

      • THEE Yard Ape

EXACTLY!!! Well stated!! Doing what democrats do best!!!

      • Denise Allen

And her colleague is not doing the same?

    • Denise Allen

Good point! As I have long suspected, that day people begin debating about birth control and men’s reproductive health- then you will really see what people feel about women in this country. The amendment to have physicians ask women if they would like to see the ultrasound smacks of intimidation and the belief that women need to be led around by the womb in order for them to make a decision. It takes two people to make a baby- what will daddy be doing while mommy is being intimidated?

      • Just Axin

Denise- I used that word because I wanted to be as derogatory as possible. I’d use the c word, but you’d hit “report comment” as well.
First, I know it’s convenient to say that bullets are to blame for killing people, but “get a clue”. Your hero kelly wanted to impose a tax on bullets. I don’t feel like debating gun control with you, but in summary that would not do a damn thing and, as usual, would punish the law abiding. I know why kelly proposed this lame, attention getting, time wasting idea but I don’t want my employees wasting their time and my $ on the aforementioned. Get it?

      • Just Axin

And for the record, gov’t should stay out of any birth control decision.

      • it’s only an offer

Cassidy is way off base and irrational. Viagra has nothing to do with this. It is not intimidating at all to be asked if you’d like to see an ultra sound. 20 years ago at an abortion clinic I had second thoughts and asked to see the ultrasound-which THEY do prior to an abortion procedure, and I was REFUSED-told I wasn’t allowed to see it. Imagine! My own body and fetus-Refused. The clinic might lose money if I want to keep it. This law gives women options-isn’t it supposed to be about choice?

  • elaine

hey guys, when the shoe is on the other foot, you get all hostile about a man watching a video, but think nothing of a women having and intrusive procedure before she can get an abortion.I am tired of men putting down women.lets all
stand up to these chauvenists.Ladies lets all stand united, and vote the creeps out of office.

    • WetNurse

An ultrasound is intrusive, but an abortion isn’t? Wow!

      • Toonces

        LOL wETnURSE ^5!

  • dmbmve

Cassidy hit it right on the nose. The majority of lawmakers are men who have no idea what its like to be a woman let alone make life decisions for them. Who are they to try and tell me that I must have a baby just because I got raped? Not your choice and neither was it mine when it happened. Politicians need to concentrate on the economy and world affairs, not peoples personal lives.

Oh yeah and Rush Limbaugh can go to hell.and frywith the rest of the liars.

    • WetNurse

Most abortions in this country aren’t performed due to one being raped. Provide facts that they are and I will give your bogus argument some credence.

  • jeremy

Yeah, show a video of a hard on turning blue. That’ll only make guys need to double the dose. Good one.

Jim be careful-the politicians may try and figure out a way to get discarded fetuses to vote

  • Me

Does the lawmaker also want to require women who want contraceptives to watch graphic videos of the side-effects for that as well?

  • MARCO

REALLY NICE THAT THIS REPRESENTATIVE AS NOTHING BETTER TO DO THAN COME UP WITH AN IDEA THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH TODAYS SOCIETY NOR DOES IT AFFECT ANY BODY. WHAT IS SHE I THINKING,??. WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE OR HEAR IS BETTER SCHOOLS, MORE JOBS, I HAVE AN IDEA LETS NOT REELECT HER TO OFFICE. SIMPLE PILL LIKE VIAGRA OR BIRTH CONTROL PILL IS THE SAME, ABORTION AND VIAGRA IS NOT THE SAME. POLITICIAN WITH ALL THAT STUDY AND EDUCATION COME UP WITH LITTLE RETARTED AND LITTLE KID STUFF. GROW UP AND FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO DUE BECAUSE WHAT YOU ARE DOING NOW IS NOT RIGHT FOR YOU.

  • Lisa

Actually, I think she is doing a great job making a very important point. I can make decisions about my health without interference from my government and forced ultrasounds yet I’m being told I’m incapable of doing so. We owe it to the men of this country to return the favor and ensure that they, too, are making informed choices regarding their health as well.

    • http://killerboob.wordpress.com KillerBoob

Well said, Lisa. I love how people here are offended that a lawmaker should propose legislation that mess with a guy’s right to make a medical choice, but the ultrasound? Totally different matter! Apparently the 1st instance is a waste of lawmakers’ time, but the latter? So necessary!

      Hilarious.

  • Kevin

I (as a man) would not mind watching that video and i do not understand the uproar over it.
the ultrasound should be watched because i do not think that some people really understand that what is in the womb is a bady and they need to see it.
this is not so much about religion as about killing a unborn baby.
so what makes a baby not a baby?

    • Koruga

The fact that it’s not actually a baby yet? It’s not fully developed, it can’t think or feel. Pigs have more self-awareness. Would you like to try an abolish bacon?

  • Mallory

The capitalism is the main reason people start to make and use viagra.
