April 22, 2000 - White Sox brawl against Detroit

This was one of those fights that fans from both teams will never forget.

The infamous brawl between the White Sox and Tigers that resulted in the suspension of 16 players started out in the sixth inning of an early-season game in Chicago. Detroit starter Jeff Weaver hit Carlos Lee with a pitch resulting in his ejection. As Weaver exited the field, he exchanged words with Lee.

The White Sox would retaliate in the eighth inning, holding comfortably to an 8-1 lead.

Chicago starter Jim Parque hit leadoff man Dean Palmer in the arm with the first pitch of the inning. Palmer immediately rushed the mound and threw his helmet at Parque. Both benches emptied, and the brawl ensued.

The fight resulted in the suspension of 16 players for a total of 82 games, which was believed to be the harshest penalty for fighting in baseball history.

Managers Phil Garner of Detroit and Jerry Manuel of the White Sox were suspended for eight games each for the fight. Tigers coach Juan Samuel was given 15 games for throwing punches.

Palmer was suspended for eight games. Parque got a three-game suspension.

White Sox reliever Keith Foulke, who needed five stitches under his left eye, was suspended for three games. Chicago outfielder Magglio Ordonez was suspended for five.

Nine others were fined, ranging from $3,000 for Palmer to $500 for Detroit pitchers Danny Patterson and Jim Poole.
