VA Radio Host: Smart May Not Want Hassle Of Illinois

(WSCR) Will Shaka Smart leave his post at VCU to join Illini Nation?

That’s the question on the minds of college basketball fans in Illinois this week.

Reports indicate Illinois has offered Shaka a contract, but Greg Burton of 950 WXGI in Richmond, Va.,  said Smart is comfortable at VCU and may not want to rebuild another program.

“VCU doesn’t have football, so all of their resources go into men’s basketball,” Burton said. “They do have a considerable amount of resources, not just when it comes to his salary, but recruiting budgets and some of the other amenities. … I think he feels like there is a ton of opportunity for sustained success here at VCU instead of going to Illinois or another program and trying to revive what was once great.”

Still, Burton believes Smart respects the Illinois program.

“I know that coach Smart hasn’t commented specifically on Illinois, but there’s no doubt that he regards Illinois as a good job, or maybe even a great job,” Burton said. “The question is whether or not it’s the right job for him.

I think more than double his current salary will make it worth the hassle. He’d one of the highest paid guys in the nation. He would be stupid not to take the job.
