October 7, 2005 - Game 3 of the ALDS: El Duque Game

Entering Game 3 of the ALDS, the White Sox were one game away from heading to their first ALCS since 1993.

The White Sox had swept the first two games against the Red Sox in Chicago, but the series shifted to Boston for Game 3.

The clinching game featured a starting pitching match up of Freddy Garcia against Tim Wakefield. Garcia lasted five innings, allowing three runs on five hits, while Wakefield tossed 5 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on six hits.

The White Sox struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the third inning, with Boston answering right back with two in the fourth.

With Jermaine Dye on base in the sixth inning and the score tied at 2-2, Paul Konerko launched a home run the put the White Sox up 4-2.

In the Red Sox's half of the inning, Manny Ramirez led off with a monster home run, cutting their deficit to one.

Later in the inning, Orlando "El Duque" Hernández came on in relief with the bases loaded and no body out.

Clinging to a one-run lead, he got Jason Varitek to foul out, Tony Graffanino to pop out to short and struck out Johnny Damon to end the inning without giving up another run.

El Duque proceeded to pitch three total innings, allowing just one hit. Bobby Jenks then came in to finish the game in the ninth, earning his second save of the series.

With the win, the White Sox earned a date with the Angels in the ALCS.
