Elderly Woman Shot Dead; Son Injured By Self-Inflicted Wound

DYER, Ind. (CBS) -- A 95-year-old Northwest Indiana woman was shot dead Sunday morning, and her 74-year-old son is in the hospital after he shot himself, officials said.

Police were called around 6:07 a.m. Sunday to a home at 830 Killarney Drive in the Briar Ridge community in Dyer, in response to the man shooting himself, a release from police said. When police arrived, they found his mother was dead.

A release from the Lake County Coroner's Office said the woman, Blach Bradley, died of a gunshot wound to the chest and her death has been ruled a homicide.

Bradley's son, who owns the home, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, police said.

Dyer police said Monday morning that the case was still under investigation but that the man did not suffer a life-threatening wound.

Raymond Gomez, a neighbor, said he would often see a man leave the house go golfing in the evenings but said he hadn't seen him lately. The home is located along the Briar Ridge golf course.

"He told me that he hasn't felt good," Gomez said.

Gomez said he knew the man's mother lived with him and that she had been sick. He never saw her, though, he said.

Two other family members were in the house at the time, according to the police report.
