Back Of The Yards Blaze Causes Partial Building Collapse

UPDATED 04/06/12 2:33 p.m.

CHICAGO (CBS)--Chicago firefighters needed several hours to put out a stubborn 2-11 alarm fire that raced through a series of storefronts in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

As WBBM Newsradio's Bob Roberts reports, the fire broke out around 7 p.m. Thursday in the rear of the Garza Appliance resale store at 4846 S. Ashland Ave.

The blaze raced through a series of mostly vacant storefronts and apartments at 4846, 4848 and 4850 S. Ashland Ave.

The roof of the appliance store caved in, and portions of the walls collapsed, before the fire was brought under control. But no one was hurt.

Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said wires at the rear of the buildings also hampered firefighters' efforts to get water on the fire.

The Fire Department has ruled that faulty wiring was to blame for the blaze, the Sun-Times Media Wire reported.
