Phone Scammer Targeting Kendall County Residents

YORKVILLE, Ill. (CBS) -- The Kendall County Sheriff's Office is warning residents to beware of a potential phone scam.

As WBBM Newsradio's John Waelti reports, several residents of Kendall County have received calls from somebody who claimed to be not from Microsoft, but from "Windows" – a likely red flag given that Windows is an operating system and not a company.

Kendall County Sheriff's Deputy Craig French says the caller then tries to scare the victim with talk of viruses and spyware.

The caller has the victim long onto a Web site, which allows him to take control of their computers.

"The person would tell them that there was a problem with their computer, and that there's viruses, and that the only way they could fix it was to pay them $250 and get a credit card number for that," French said.

French says so far, no residents have provided that information, and nobody should.

"Just like anything, never give out any personal information. It's always best to investigate where they're from," he said.

French also warns residents not to log onto any unknown Web sites that are provided by strangers over the phone, or by e-mail.
