Huntley Fire Captain Killed In Motorcycle Crash

CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. (CBS) -- A 54-year-old fire captain from far northwest suburban Huntley was killed Thursday, when a car pulled in front of him at an intersection that's seen its share of crashes.

As WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports, Huntley Fire Capt. John Winkelman, known as "Winky," was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle on Route 176 in Crystal Lake around 3 p.m. Thursday, when police say a car driven by a 27-year-old woman pulled out from Mount Thabor Road,the Daily Herald reported.

The woman told police by the time she saw Winkelman, it was too late, the Daily Herald reported. He ran into the car broadside.

There is a jog in the road approaching the intersection, and police tell the newspaper there have been other crashes there.

Police do not believe Winkelman was speeding. He was not wearing a helmet, the Daily Herald reported.

The driver of the car that Winkelman broadsided, a Chrysler, was hospitalized for minor injuries after the crash, the newspaper reported.
