Johnson was taken into custody after a 2-year-old girl, Armani Cotton, was found unresponsive in bed Saturday at the Emerald Avenue home.

The girl's mother, Brittany Cotton, 19, had dropped off her daughter at Johnson's home in Englewood Saturday morning so that she could go to work. But police were called to the home and found the little girl unresponsive, with at least two bite marks and bruises and scratches all over her body.

Armani was pronounced dead at St. Bernard Hospital. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office on Sunday determined she died from beating and said the death was a homicide.

Chicago police and the state's child welfare agency were investigating.
