CALUMET CITY, Ill. (STMW) – Four people were shot — two fatally — in a parking lot outside a south suburban nightclub early Saturday. One of the dead was shot by police, who were engaged in gunfire with a suspect from the shooting they responded to the scene for.
Calumet City police were called about 1:50 a.m. to a large disturbance with shots fired in a parking lot at 735 Torrence Ave., according to Calumet City Police Capt. Dan Zorzi. The parking lot is next to a club called What’s Up.
Officers responding to the scene located two apparent gunshot victims, Zorzi said. “While our officers were on the scene there were more shots,” Zorzi said. Officers exchanged gunfire with the man who was firing the gun then, “and that person was shot,” Zorzi said.
No officers were injured in the incident.
A total of four people were wounded, two of them — including the one shot by police — fatally, Zorzi said. The two who were killed were men in their 20s, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. Both suffered multiple gunshot wounds, according to initial reports from the medical examiner’s office. The other two, a man and a woman, were hospitalized as of Saturday morning, Zorzi said.
The South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force was assisting Calumet City police in the investigation and the Illinois Public Integrity Task Force was also investigating because of the police-involved shooting.
