Person Killed In I-57 Crash Near Calumet Park

CALUMET PARK, Ill. (STMW) -- A person was killed early Sunday in a fiery crash on I-57 near southwest suburban Calumet Park, State Police said.

The crash happened about 12:54 a.m. when a 2004 Chrysler Crossfire traveling at a high rate of speed rear-ended a 2002 Geo Tracker, causing the Tracker to explode into flames and trapping the driver inside, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Joe Stangl said.

The Tracker's driver -- whose age and gender is still unknown -- was dead on the scene, and the 31-year-old man driving the Crossfire was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, Stangl said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office has been notified of the fatality but did not have additional details early Sunday.
