2 Shot Near Evanston Township High School

EVANSTON, Ill. (CBS) -- Two men were recovering from gunshot wounds Monday morning, after being shot during a group fight in Evanston.

The shooting happened just after 7:15 p.m. in the 1800 block of Lyons Street, just about a block north of Evanston Township High School, according to Evanston police.

A 21-year-old man from Des Plaines was shot in the knee, and was in good condition at Evanston Hospital, police said. A 20-year-old man, who lives in Evanston, was shot in the back and was in fair condition at Evanston Hospital.

Police said one of the victims was rushed immediately into surgery.

Evanston Police Chief Richard Eddington said the shooting apparently stemmed from a conflict between two groups from the west side of Evanston. Bystanders thronged the area immediately after the shooting, as police cordoned off Lyons Street.

One bystander across the street said he was playing a game on his computer when he heard what he thought was a firecracker.

He realized it was a gunshot, he said, and heard five shots in all.

One of the gunshot victims was limping, the bystander said.

Police said they found one of the victims on Lyons Street, and another two blocks away in the 1600 block of Dodge Avenue.
