Dreary Afternoon Coming With Temperatures Hovering In Low 50s

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Conditions will be chilly and dreary for the rest of the day, and you might want to press your fireplace into service when the weekend comes around.

While it started out sunny Thursday morning, cloud cover had taken over by midday. CBS 2 Meteorologist Megan Glaros says the clouds will remain, and the temperatures will remain flat for the rest of the day.

As of 11 a.m., it was 51 at O'Hare International Airport and 53 at Midway. It was a comfortable 62 in Kankakee, but only 49 in Waukegan.

A cold front has passed through the area, and a ridge of high pressure is keeping conditions cool and breezy. The ridge of high pressure is so huge that it extends all the way northeast to Siberia, and up to the North Pole.

The high for the day is 54, with an overnight low just 5 degrees above freezing at 37. The high on Friday is 51, with clouds and a few peeps of sun, and rain chances increasing in the afternoon and evening.

On Saturday, get out your thick socks and stack up your firewood, because the high is only 49 degrees, and it will be raining on top of it.

The high for Sunday is 52, and Monday 53. Finally on Tuesday, the high climbs back to 60, followed by 63 on Wednesday.
