Woman, 81, Hit And Killed By SUV On Devon Avenue

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An 81-year-old woman was killed Thursday evening when a sport-utility vehicle struck her as she crossed busy Devon Avenue in West Rogers Park.

The fatal crash happened around 8:20 p.m. on the 2700 block of West Devon Avenue, in the bustling Indian business district that is regularly busy with heavy road and pedestrian traffic.

Paramedics took the woman -- identified as Tasoula Metropolos -- to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston after she was hit by the Chevrolet Tahoe.

Metropolos, of the 6400 block of North Fairfield Avenue just steps away from the accident scene, was pronounced dead at Saint Francis at 9:11 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The Tahoe driver who hit her, a 28-year-old man, remained at the scene, Greer said. He had not been charged or cited for the accident as of Friday morning.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
