Man Tries To Rob Magnificent Mile Bank, Leaves Without Cash

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man tried to rob a Magnificent Mile bank on Monday, but left the loot behind.

Police said a man walked into the Citibank branch at 539 N. Michigan Av. around 9:45 a.m. Monday and told a teller he had a bomb in a plastic bag he was carrying.

The man told the teller to fill the bag with cash, or he'd blow up the bank, according to police.

The teller placed money in the bag, but police said something apparently spooked the robber, who fled the bank without taking the money. He left behind the package he was carrying.

Chicago Police Sgt. Del Pilar said the bag did not contain a bomb, but did have an object inside that looked like a bomb.

"Somebody definitely made it out to look like one," he said.

The suspect was wearing a yellow poncho, black baseball cap, black surgical mask, and blue surgical gloves.

The bank and the businesses around the bank were evacuated for about two hours while the Police Bomb and Arson unit checked out the scene.

Police were still searching for the suspect as of Monday afternoon.
